In the sport modified feature, rookie Luke McCormick took the lead from the 2nd row for 3 laps until Julie Boettler moved her familiar #97 to the high side and took over on the point. Julie pulled away from the field until a red flag on lap 12. Brian Carey and Rex Higgins tangled on the backstretch with Higgins ending up on top of the wall. The car then barrel rolled twice coming to rest on its wheels. Higgins was ok (sore today) but the car was a mess. The cage and safety seat did their jobs in taking care of one of Aztec's popular drivers. Carey continued racing. After the restart, Boettler went on to take win #12 for this season. Joey Klemish started last and finished 2nd. Third went to Jordan Eddleman with Luke McCormick taking 4th for his first top five finish. Brian Carey ended up in 5th. The rest of the finishing order was: Paul Miller, Darrell Cordary, Dylan Terry, Roger Cordary, Clint Proffitt, Marshall Moody, and Rex Higgins. Heat race winners were: Jordan Eddleman and Rex Higgins.
The modified feature had only 12 cars taking the green flag. But these 12 cars provided plenty of exciting close racing with one wild crash. Eddie Farley took the early lead for about 5 laps till the familiar #18z zipped on by. Zane Debilbiss really had no challengers for the win but 2nd on back was a true battle. During the battle for 2nd on back to 7th, Nick Nelson was tagged in the back causing him to spin into the backstretch wall. In the process, Aaron Spangler was collected sending his car upon on the wall (another one in the same place). He was luckier than Higgins as his car almost flipped but somehow came down onto the track upright. Mark Rodgers was also involved with heavy sheet metal damage. Nelson and Spagler were ok but out of the race. Rogers managed to continue after a pit stop and eventually finished 3rd. After a restart the race finished quickly with Zane Devilbiss winning and Regan Tafoya 2nd. Finishing 4th behind Rogers was Eddie Farley and Charlie Felker in 5th. Sixth on back were: Shane Devilbiss, Allen Bradley, Ed Mangum, Dereck Rhoden, Aaron Spangler, Nick Nelson and Jeff Jennings. Heat race winners were: Eddie Farley and Aaron Spangler.
The Stock cars brought 13 cars out for the feature. Josh Turnbull was in front for a couple of laps till Kenny Hendershot took his usual spot on the track....in front of the field. Kenny made it look too easy as he cruised to another win at Aztec Speedway. Meanwhile, back in the pack. Three, four and five, yes five, wide racing was going on. No spins, no crashes, all green flag racing and very close racing to the end. And the finish was like this: Kenny Hendershot, Stephan Carey, Frankie Hendershot, Richard Trujillo, Travis Southerlin, Larry Bradley, Traci Jennings, Jeramey Bradley, Michael Farley, Danny Stevenson, Josh Turnbull, Johnny Livingston and Jerald Wright. Heat race winners were: The Mangum Maulers....Kenny and Frankie Hendershot and Stephan Carey.
The hobby stock feature was short and sweet with only 6 cars making the call. Freddie Brooks took the win with Luke Klemm next. The next four were Paul Dorsett, Jordan Hockenhull, Adam Solkup (pavement car) and Kelly Klemm. Luke Klemm won the heat race and also won the Dash for Cash ($200) sponsored by Mann Motorsports/Mann Family Dental.
The sport compacts class does seem to be growing as eight cars took the green flag. Ranai Toler won with Travis Bray a close 2nd. Third was Austin Maxwell and Michael Cody 4th. Fifth on back were: Stacey Southerlin, Camron Spangler and Josh Smith (lost a wheel). Tom Dutton DNS.
Heat race winner was Josh Smith.
Thanks for coming out everybody and hope to see you at the next racing weekend August 23rd at Aztec Speedway.
