Let's start with the modifieds. Fasten your seat belts and try to keep up. Only 13 cars took the green but the fans got their moneys worth in this one as Allen Bradley took the early lead to only give it up to Derek Neil on lap three. Neil started mid pack in this 25 lapper and was obviously the one to beat but that was not to happen. Neil, in his #99 Schaeffer's Oil Special, ran 19 laps in the 15 second range with one of them almost breaking the three year old track record held by Allen Bradley (15.312) Neil's best time was 15.693 sec. Three other cars also dipped into the 15 sec. lap club. This was Neil's third trip back to racing after taking off a few years. You never forget how to ride a bike or.....a racecar. Finishing 3.8 seconds back in 2nd was Jeremy Farley. In 3rd was Regan Tafoya with Zane Devilbiss 4th and Darrell Bradford 5th. The rest of the field finished in order: Allen Bradley, Jason Keeler, Tyrone Yazzie, Dave Davis, Aaron Spangler, Shane Devilbiss, Pat Castel and Jody Cornell. Heat races were won by: the brothers, Zane and Shane Devilbiss.
The Sport Modified 25 lapper was closely contested by several cars even though only three were on the point. Jay Kibel took the early lead for 3 laps. Ricky Baldwin took over for three more and then along came Luke McCormick. McCormick put the #26 McCormick sponsored car in front to stay and take his first sport modified win. The racing between McCormick, Ricky Baldwin and Jordan Eddleman was intence to say the least. At one point, the three of them were side by side down the straight. It looked to be anybody's race at that point but McCormick finally put a little distance between himself and Eddleman. In the final lap Eddleman got caught up in traffic and dropped to 4th ending his chance for a challenge to the leader. Finishing in 2nd was Ricky Baldwin followed by his brother Jessie Baldwin. Fourth went to Eddleman and behind him in 5th was Rex Higgins. Sixth on back was: Paul Miller, Jason Hockenhull, Randy Dorsett, Darrell Cordary, Bryan Carey, Michelle Reed, Mike Thiessen, Dylan Terry, Marshall Moody, Jamie Garcia, Bill Ferguson, Bill Dowdy, Jay Kiblel and Tom Dutton. Heat race winners were: Ricky Baldwin, Jay Kibel and Jason Hockenhull.
The Stock Cars put on their usual great show of racing. Jordan Hockenhull showed early speed and was in front for the first 7 laps. Another one of our young guns took over and would not be denied his first win this year. Jeramey Bradley took his #25 to the winner's circle. Although he was involved in an early crash with a couple of other cars and sustained some heavy sheet metal damage, the car was still fast and showed it. Driving skill was also a big factor in this win. Taking 2nd was Race Fisher with the winningest driver at Aztec this year, Tony Hill, in 3rd. Larry Bradley took 4th and Travis Southerlin was 5th. Sixth on back were: Josh Turnbull, Traci Jennings, Kelly Klemm, Gerald Wright, Stephan Carey, Jordan Hockenhull, Skyler Heath and Jim Fisher. Heat race winners were: Travis Southerlin and Jordan Hockenhull.
The hobby feature was won by Joseph Lopez with Brooklynne Kibel taking 2nd on the last lap. Third was Jesse Minor and RaNai Toler 4th. Fifth was Patricia Phillips and sixth Paul Weller. Heat race winner was Joseph Lopez.
The sport compacts once again had a short field with Josh Smith winning the feature and the heat. Austin Maxwell was 2nd with Kieth Miller 3rd.
Those that missed attending because of weather missed a tremendous bunch of racing. Now don't miss next week. Friday and Saturday nights, the Winged Sprint Cars return to Aztec Speedway. Two big nights of fast winged action as the Border States Racing Series comes to Aztec Speedway with the WINGS on the sprints. Racing will start at 7pm both nights.....I'll see you there.
