The Heats ran as follows.
Cruiser/Hornets had three heats. In Heat 1 Daysha Boelter #7 came home in first place, #75 of Jared Hensley brought in second with #98y Coulter Morgan rounding out the podium.
Heat 2 saw #97b of Justin Morgan take the win ove a hard charging #78 of Anthony Sandoval. Ms Yates in #15 followed for third.
Heat 3 had the other Sandoval #80 of Ernie Sandoval run a strong race for the win and looked the fastest Cruiser of the night. Gary Smith #28 chased Ernie but could not get the lead back after a slight bobble. Third place went to #26 of Cody Sanchez.
The Wings Mini Sprints had seven cars compete. Two of those ran in the "rookie" class. Oddly #44 of James Hatch of sprint car fame had to run the rookie race since he is new to this division. He looked fast and will be a handfull for the current class leaders Jacob Johnston, Mike Barnes and Lalo Saenz. The first heat had five cars with Jacob Johnston #17j running away from the rest of the field. Brianna Franchini #5 returned after a long absence and looked like she had lost none of her driving talent over the break, she finished second with #24 of Kalee Dons in third. The rookie heat had two cars, Katie Seals #84 who is showing improvement and #44 Of James Hatch wining.
The Street Stock division is heating up with lots of competition for the top spot. In heat 1 young Danny Gross Jr was a strong winner with Cameron Martin #m77 taking second and another youngster Rob Mosely #74m in third. The second heat had Rick Boelter #5x take the lead with Joel Duke #99 second and Ronnie Bell #1 a strong third. Notably R C Combs was a DNF, never heard why.
Now for the X Mods. What a strong division and these guys really put on the show. Enough cars for three full heats. In heat one had Shawn Dutcher Sr put one in the win column. In second was a returning Todd Budlong 1X in a loaner car from Mychal Lucero #1. This was the first time Todd had even sat in this car, he had a good showing running second, followed by Mychal Lucero chasing his last years car. Great race. The second heat was a bar burner with #7 of Steve Bertetto besting #15 Dee Yates and #0 of J R Bonesteel. The final heat had the other Bonesteel, Steve #00 winning over a good running Mike Oneal #29 and Tanner Higdon #60 third.
The X Mods had a Dash for Cash which J R Bonesteel #0 won and Mychal Lucero #1 chasing.
The Wing 305 Sprints had a good field with some out of towners. In heat one Jesse Baker #40 in the Butch Box car, won over Chuck Jackson #49 in his pretty new car, newcomer to the sprint car field David Gay #2d came under the checker for third place. The second heat had one of our visitors from down south #9 of Robert Herrera win, with Paul Whitehead #12p following and #19 of Wes Wofford.
Following are the Main Events. Beginning with the Cruiser/Hornets. Very strong field with 20 cars competing. 15 of which made it to the finish. First place went to Gary Smith #28 in his station wagon, Cody Sanchez #26 had one of his best finishes in second. The heat winner Ernie Sandoval #80 had a good showing in third. The class champ from two years ago Cheyanna Yates #15 had problems and finished sixth in her cruiser as her Street Stock had transmission issues a couple of weeks ago and the car was not ready for this weekend. Phil York #1 followed Ms Yates.
The Winged Mini Sprints Had Jacob Johnston #17j win over #44 of James Hatch. Hatch looks like he might have some challenges for the young Mr Johnston. Third place to Brianna Franchini #5 ran a strong third finish.
Now for the wildest race of the night. The Street Stock main. This class is really heating up with 8-9 folks able to win on any night. But, tonight it was Rick Boelter #5x in the winners circle. Rick raced in Las Cruces las week and won there too, and that is no small feat with that crowd of hot shoes. Ronnie Bell has returned to the division and looks to be one of the hotdogs to beat. Ronnie ran second with the young Mr Mosely #74m third. There was a DQ of R C Combs so he didnt have a good night. There were several drivers that drove quite rough, it looked more like the last race of the season. Joel Duke #99 ran a consistent race in fourth place, Joel is always smooth and run a clean race. Again Danny Gross Jr was running strong, his car sounds fantastic, but suffered a left ft flat that took him out of competition.
X Mods ran FAST on the great track tonight. The track has been "hammer down" the last three weeks. Great job by Charlie Fagen and his crew. The win went to #7 of Steve Bertetto who put on a smooth clinic for the drivers, Steve thanks Justin Weber #63 A Mod and Mechanic Richard Blaney for setting up his car. The last two week Steve has been the man to beat. In second is track favorite and past years A Mod champ Todd Budlone #1x in his borrowed car. Todd was as smooth as I have ever seen. I am guessing Mychal may want that car back. Shawn Dutcher #54 ran hard but just could not overtake Budlong. J R Bonesteel #0 had a couple of cars spin in his path and he could only make it to 4th place. Tim Hooper in #54 looked good, as did Dee Yates and Skimmer Latham. But it was Bertetto all the way, great job of smooth driving on Steve's part, we expect good things coming to this driver.
The 305 Wing Sprints were scary fast on the smooth track. Wes Wofford had made wining the main look easy. We keep giving him the big prize money so he keep coming up from Cruces to take it. Jesse Baker #40 ran a very very strong second to Wofford with #9 of Robert Herrera taking the last podium finish. Paul Whitehead 21p looked quick but just didnt have enough to make the pass on Herrera and finished a respectible fourth.
The races on the dirt at Sandia Speedway just keep getting better and better. You gotta come out and see for yourself. Next race weekend for the dirt is 5/30/15 so you have plenty of time to plan. See you there.
