Let's start off with the heat race winners. Michael Farley took down heat #1. Heat #2 was won by Steffan Carey but in this 8 lap race Carey and Tony Hill got together once, no twice, no three times. Hill ended up last and Carey first. After reviewing the events on the track Steffan Carey was DQd and placed last. Ron Brewer was declared the winner. Stay tuned, we're just getting started. The sport modified heat winners were: Rex Higgins, Jordan Eddleman, and Jessie Baldwin. The modified heat winners were: Regan Tafoya, Aaron Spangler and Zane Devilbiss. Mini stock heat winner was Billy Millard and the winner of the sport compacts (front wheel drive) was Eugene Felker. The hobby stock heat winners were: Jason Duggins and Paul Dorsett.
The modifieds were selected to run the Dash for Cash sponsored by Four Corners Family Dental of Farmington. The top two from the three heats advanced to this 8 lap dash. Zane Devilbiss beat Nick Nelson to the checkers to take the $250 check. And of course the man, Dr. Tyler Mann, presented the check to a very happy Zane Devilbiss.
Now the features. The IMCA stock car feature was anticipated to be an exciting event considering what had taken place in the heats. And it was exciting...during the green flag racing, during the yellow flag laps and after the race. Only 12 cars took the green but it was enough for lots of action. Rick Combs took the early lead for several laps until Ron Brewer and Larry Bradley moved up to challenge and pass Combs. Combs spun and was tagged by another car sustaining heavy sheet metal damage. Good racing all around the track with one more crash taking place on lap 4. Sansoni was tapped by Farley and spun on the backstretch collecting Skyler Heath. Sansoni was out and Heath pitted for a new tire. The Carey/ Hill battled continued during the feature with both cars eventually finishing in the top five. Heath was back up to 5th with 4 laps to and found the high line to his liking. It only took him two laps to move past four cars and take his first win at Aztec. He won his first feature last week at Cortez. The Tennessee Voulunteers are back!!! Oh, that's football. Well, Skyler Heath is a Tennessee Volunteer and now he is making his mark in racing. After the race, the top five cars go to the infield tech area for inspection. Carey and Hill continued their dispute there with security having to step in and stop the confrontation. Carey got back into his car and left the tech area before being inspected whick results in an automatic disqualification. Here are the results: Skyler Heath wins with Larry Bradley 2nd and Ron Brewer 3rd. In 4th was Tony Hill and 5th was awarded to Michael Farley. Sixth on back were: Rick Combs, Jeramy Bradley, Jerald Wright, Samuel Sansoni, Jordan Hockenhull and Race Fisher. Carey finished 5th but was DQd.
The modifieds fielded 18 cars with several cars fighting for the first five spots. Tyrone Yazzie was in front for a few laps along with Danny Bradford and Zane Devilbiss. Devilbiss eventually takes over the top spot on lap 11 by getting by the #111 of Danny Bradford. The race was hard fought all the way with some very close racing. Devilbiss took the checkers with Tyrone Yazzie a close 2nd and Danny Bradford 3rd. Fourth went to Jason Keeler and 5th was Regan Tafoya. Sixth on back were: Darrell Bradford, Aaron Spangler, Nick Nelson, Shane Devilbiss, Wayne Soares, Brandon Tenski, Camron Spangler, Alan Bradley, Ron Goshorn (welcome back), Jody Cornell, Donald Scott, Patrick Castel, and David Davis.
The sport modifieds brought 15 cars to the feature for a 20 lapper. Darrell Cordary was in front for the first two cirquits until Brian Carey took over. Cordary hung on to 2nd for several laps but was passed by Kristi Tenski and Jessie Baldwin. Brian Carey held onto the lead with Tenski challenging once but to no avail. Carey wins with Tenski 2nd and Jessie Baldwin 3rd. In fourth was Darrell Cordary and 5th went to Rex Higgins. Sixth on back were: B Baldwin in a new car #5, Randy Dorsett, Richard Trujillo, Shane Simonton, Michelle Reed, Paul Miller, Bill Dowdy, Sergio Luengos, Jordan Eddleman and Dylan Terry. Terry T-boned a car on lap 2 and sustained heavy damage.
The hobby stock drivers seem to be racing for 2nd these days as Jason Duggins has this class covered. Duggins wins his 11th feature of the year with ease. In 2nd was Johnny Livingston. Third went to Paul Dorsett and fourth was Brooklynne Kibel. Fifth wl as Trent Jajera followed by RaNai Toler, Robert Mason and Bill Dutton.
The compact feature was taken down handily by Brittany Yates with a mini stock driven by Eugene Felker in 2nd. Third was another mini, Evan Felker. Keith Miller was 4th and Rick (slot car) McDonald was 5th. Michael Cody was next followed by Tyler Mann in the 3 cyl. Metro.
The Mini stock feature was won by Eugene Felker with Billy Millard 2nd and John Kester 3rd. Fourth was Bart Small and fifth went to Vance Millard.
And that completed a full night of racing at Aztec Speedway. We race again on 8/28 and 8/29. One night is a rain out make up followed by a regularly scheduled race. I'll see you there.
