The stock cars and hobby stocks were the featured events of the night. The stock cars started 12 cars as two could not make the call for this race. Earlier in a heat race, Jeff Jennings filling in for his sister, blew an engine in a big way and parked the car. Glenn Bray also did not come out for the feature. This small field of cars gave the fans their moneys worth as they ran side by side and bumper to bumper for the first several laps.
Trevor Combs was in front for 4 laps until Aaron Spangler took over on lap 5 and held on for the win. Spangler was challenged for many laps by Trevor Combs and R.C. Combs and a high riding Jeramey Bradley. At the checkers Spangler pulled off the win by about 3 car lengths over Jeramey Bradley. Trevor Combs got by Larry Bradley on the last lap to take 3rd...Larry settled for 4th and young R.C. Combs took 5th. This was Aaron Spanglers' first race in a stock car at Aztec Speedway. He of course is known for piloting a modified for over 100 feature wins. Spangler pocketed $500 for the win. Sixth on back were: Travis Southerln, Skyler Heath, Rick Combs, Jordan Hockenhull, Jerald Wright, Race Fisher and Michael Farley. Fisher and Farley both retired with mechanical problems. Heat race winners were: Race Fisher and Travis Southerlin.
The hobby stock feature had some great cash and prizes up for grabs in this Davey Phillips Memorial race. Only 9 cars took the green but put on a great race for the fans. Adam Soukup took the lead for one lap. On lap 2 Jason Duggins came from the back to assume the lead and stretch it out for one of the most lop sided wins since Johnny Herrera did this way back in the 80s in a sprint car. Duggins lapped the field except for the 2nd place car and he was closing on that one. Duggins collected $300 and a new motor for the win. Darrell Cordary finished 2nd and picked up cash and a transmission. Third was RaNai Toler with Bill Dutton next and Adam Soukup in 5th. Freddie Brooks was 6th and won a new clutch for his car. Seventh went to Brooklynne Kible and 8th to Trent Najera and 9th to Robert Mason. Heat race winners were: Robert Mason and Jason Duggins.
The A-modifieds ran a 20 lapper with Zane Devilbiss cruising to an easy win. Second went to Derek Neil with Eddie Farley 3rd and 4th was Jason Keeler. Fifth was Julie Keeler and 6th to Tom Melloy. Heat race winner was Eddie Farley.
The limited modifieds started 12 cars in the 25 lap feature. Jordan Eddleman took command on lap 1 and never looked back as he took down anothr win at Aztec Speedway. Finishing 2nd was Brian Carey with Bub Hughes in 3rd. Fourth was Darrell Cordary (pulling double duty in this and a hobby) and fifth went to Allen Palmer, now with a record top five finish in every feature this year. Sixth on back were: Anthony Ludwig, Michelle Reed, Travis Montgomery, Adam Brewer, Jacob Buffington, and Jay Hank. Hank had engine trouble and parked it after one lap. Heat winners were: Bub Hughes and Jay Hank.
The B-modified feature was 25 laps with just 7 cars taking the green. Rex Higgins was in front for lap one then Richard Trujillo took the lead for one lap before relinquishing it to Higgins again. Rex then stayed in front to the checkers thus keeping his record year of winning all the B-modified features this year at Aztec Speedway. Finishing 2nd was Andy Hockenhull with Frankie Hendershot, driving Robert Cody's car, in 3rd. Fourth was Randy Dorsett and fifth went to Richard Trujillo. Jay Kible and Kelly Klemm rounded out the finish. Heat winner was Rex Higgins.
The sport compacts had Jay Hicks being awarded the win with Alex Southerlin 2nd and Rick McDonald 3rd. Fourth and fifth went to Donny Stock and Brittany Yates. These two crashed out early but were both ok. Bart Small came down and raced with this class. He actually was in front at the end but could not be awarded the trophy due to the car being illegal for this class. All concerned were aware of this before the race. Bart raced for fun.
Mid season Champs were awarded thier plaques. Hobby champ is Trent Najera...B-modified champ is Rex Higgins....Sport compact champ is Brittany Yates....Stock car champ is Allen Bradley...Modified champ is Zane Devilbiss and the Limited modified champ is Jordan Eddleman. That wraps up another Saturday night of dirt track racing at Aztec Speedway. But hang on....we'll do it again next Saturday, June 25th. I'll see you there
