Three National modified champions and another driver with over 100 feature wins showed an Aztec Speedway crowd why they have earned those titles and won all those races. In the much anticipated modified feature, that combined the USRA sanctioning body with the IMCA sanctioning body, seventeen cars took the green flag. More than half the field of drivers were from various towns in New Mexico, Colorado and Utah. USRA national champ, Jacob Gallardo, started on the pole of this 25 lap feature and was never passed. Two time IMCA national champ, Zane Devilbiss, got close but just couldn't get by the leader. Devilbiss was in a battle for most of the race with Jacob's dad. Fito Gallardo, another USRA champ, ran 2nd for much of the race until Devilbiss put his car along side and pulled off the pass. The driver of the night was Aaron Spangler as he quietly moved his familiar #16 through the field to finish a close 3rd beside the fourth place finisher, Fito Gallardo. Jason Keeler turned in a nice run to grab the 5th spot. Sixth place on back were: Clint Miller, Rick Spangler, Eddie Farley, Robbie Chiles, Doug Goodenough, Julie Keeler, Jesse Lynch, Tom Melloy, Charlie Felker, Kenneth Payne, Jay McLey, and Darrell Meek. Payne and McLey were out due to a crash and Meek lost a drive shaft. The heat races were won by: Jacob Gallardo, Fito Gallardo and Aaron Spangler. The B modified feature had 13 cars in their 25 lap race with Rex Higgins winning yet another one by leading all 25 laps. Richard Trujillo did get close on the last few laps but had to settle for 2nd. Third place was taken down by Camron Spangler. Spangler, Aaron's son, proving that racing talent might be hereditary did the same as his famous dad by slowly moving up through the field to finish 3rd behind some very good drivers. In fourth was Andy Hockenhull and fifth was possibly a first, his grandson, Jordan Hockenhull. Sixth on back were: Ralph Dutcher, Bill Lynch, Randy Dorsett, Ronnie Leathem, Michael O'neal, Jay Kibel, Michael Lucero, and Robert Cody. Heat race winners were: Rex Higgins and Ronnie Leathem. The limited modified feature only had 11 cars take the green but the racing was close for 2nd. That's because Bub Hughes showed them that the #0 cookie monster car was there to dominate. Hughes won by a half lap over the rest of the field. Second place was up for grabs as four cars swapped that position more than once. At the checkers Jessie Baldwin in one of Jay Kibel's cars took the 2nd spot. Brandon Tenski drove his brother's car #5 to 3rd with Brian Carey in fourth. Fifth went to Travis Montgomery. Sixth on back were: Michelle Reed, Jay Hank, Anthony Ludwig, Allen Palmer, Sergio Luengenes and Jordan Eddleman. Heat race winners were: Jessie Baldwin and Bub Hughes. The stock car feature was as usual a nail biter. Jeramey Bradley took the lead on lap one with Trevor Combs and Josh Cain right behind him. Bradley was up front for 21 laps with Cain finally getting by him for the lead. Bradley put up a chanllenge in the final 3 laps but Cain held on for the win. Jeramey Bradley had to settle for 2nd. Bradley has a great future in racing ahead of him as he is only 20 and already has other wins under his belt. Third place went to Jeramey's dad, Larry Bradley and fourth was Stephan Carey with fifth going to Allen Bradley. Sixth on back were: Brandon Tenski, Gene Henry, Rick Combs, Race Fisher, Cheyenna Yates, Duane Brewer in his dad's car, Traci Jennings, and R.C. Combs. The last four cars went out early with mechanical problems. Heat race winners were: Josh Cain and Larry Bradley. The hobby stock feature was won by Jason Duggins in his indestructible yellow #33. Duggins rolled the car twice on Friday night at Cortez and still won the feature. He took this one with ease. In 2nd was RaNai Toler and third went to Grant Abney with 4th being Bill Dutton and fifth was Brooklynne Kibel. RaNai Toler won the heat race. And the final race of the night was the sport stocks with Brittany Yates continuing her winning ways. Jay Hicks was 2nd with Austin Maxwell 3rd. Fourth was Rick McDonald and fifth went to Donny Stock. Many prizes were won by the fans courtesy of Aztec Speedway and Matco Tools, Larry Rest. All the drivers made some young kids happy as they gave away their trophies to the lucky ones. Pictures were taken of all along with the drivers. This weekend of racing was the way it used to be and the way it should and can be. Fans, racecars and fun made for a great weekend at Aztec Speedway. We will race again next Saturday night. I hope to see you there. |
