Motiva Motor Speedway Dirt Track 7-19-2014 Bob & Ray Ingram
On a very hot day on the Dirt Track @ Motiva Motor Speedway the car count was a bit lite as there were some special shows in the area that drew some of the regular competitors. The racing was entertaining or better in all but one class.
Once again the X-Mods had the best car count of the night with 18 drivers on hand to run their 3 heats and a main event. Heat #1 saw a very good battle for the win with the top 4 drivers running side by side most of the way without ever touching each other. At the checkered flag it was the #63 of Justin Weber taking the win followed by the #15 of Dee Yates in second and the #1 of Mychal Lucero coming home in 3rd. Heat #2 also was full of heavy hitters and saw another race long battle for the win with the #29 of Mike O'Neal taking the win followed by the #62 of Tom Melloy and the #54D of Shawn Dutcher. Heat #3 wasn't nearly as close as the first two heats as the #0 of J.R. Bonesteel took off from his pole position start and pretty much ran away from the pack, but the racing for 2nd on back was very close. Chasing Bonesteel to the finish was the #761 of Hayden Foy and the #33 of LONG time racer Wild Bill Lynch. For the first time at Motiva Motor Speedway there was a dash for cash, with the winner taking home an extra $100.00 and 2nd place making an extra $50.00. Instead of having the top 2 drivers from each heat race in the Dash for Cash, track management decided to have the 5th & 6th place finishers in their heats run the dash in honor of the 5th anniversary of the dirt track on the west mesa. Taking home the $100.00 bonus money was the #7 of Shorty Steven Bertetto with the #19 of Patricia Gallegos taking home an extra $50.00. The main event saw all 18 cars on hand make the call for a very exciting race. The race went half way before the first yellow flag slowed the action with so much changing in positions it was nearly impossible to keep up. As in the heat race the #0 of J.R. Bonesteel took off from the pole position and never looked back as he took yet another win. The battle for 2nd through about 10th or 12 place was furious the entire way with a few scrimmages that slowed the pace on 3 occasions. At the stripe it was Bonesteel followed by the #1 of Mychal Lucero, #54D Shawn Dutcher, #54 Perry Held and the #7 of Steven Bertetto taking the 5th position.
The Cruisers had a nice field of 14 cars to put on 3 very good races. Heat #1 saw regular winner Devon Gates in the #33 come from deep in the field to take a close win over the #76 of Madison Conrad with the #00 of Leo Dennison nailing down the 3rd spot. This race saw the brand new #21R of Robbie Garcia take a spin through the infield that resulted in a rollover onto his top, Garcia and crew were able to make repairs in time to make the main event. Heat #2 saw the Petty Blue #43 Dodge of Art Hurley come from his last row starting spot to take the win over the #50 of the little Mustang of Todd Hendrickson and the #58 of Frank Payne. As was the case with the X-Mods all 14 of the Cruisers on hand made the call for the main event, this race got off to rough start with a big pile up on the first lap that took out heat race winner Hurley with the rest of the field being able to continue. After a couple of very scenic trips through the infield and other incidents the #50 of Todd Hendrickson did a great job of taking his first win at Motiva Motor Speedway. Chasing Hendrickson home were the #76 of Madison Conrad and the #00 of Leo Dennison. Dennison did a great job of coming back from a mid race spin to take his 3rd place finish.
The Hornets had their best field of the year with 6 cars to put on a couple of very good races. The heat race had the #99 of Lena Duke take the early lead with the others fighting to get by her. Coming out of turn 4 to the checkered flag, visiting driver Johnathan Pinckley in the #48 tried to make a valiant effort to take the win only to make VERY hard contact with the wall ending his night. Duke held on for the win with the #97B of Justin Morgan in 2nd with the #06 of Andy Fowner taking 3rd. The main event saw only 5 starters as the #48 of Pinckley could not be repaired in time to make the call. On a slightly wet track there was lots of slipping and sliding for everyone but the #06 of Andy Fowner who had no trouble at all as he lapped all but the 2nd place car and might have gotten him with one more lap. Chasing Fowner to the checkers was the #29 of Larry Johnson and the #99 of Lena Duke.
The 305 Winged Sprints are still having a hard time getting new cars on the track, but the 3 that do show up put on a good show. The heat race saw all 3 drivers stay close with the #77 of Colt Treharn taking the win and the #99 of Chuck Jackson 2nd and the #12 of Jerry Moser in 3rd. The main event once again saw the #77 of Treharn take a comfortable lead and the win with the #12 of Moser taking a spin at the flagstand under the checkered flag. The #99 of Chuck Jackson was DQ'd for making a 360 spin and continuing on and not requiring a push truck.
The Street Stocks had their smallest field of the year with only 3 cars, but these 3 were flying. The heat race had the #53 of R.C. Combs take the win over the #15 of Cheyenna Yates and the #99 of Joel Duke. The main event was a virtual replay of the heat race with the same finishing order. The #53 and the #15 ran side by side for most of the main with Duke just a short way behind hoping for a small mistake by the front two and he would be close enough to slip by for the win.
The Mini-Sprints had only 2 cars on hand tonight. The #72 of Mike Barnes took the heat race win over the #69X of T. J. McHugh. In my nearly 60 years of attending dirt track racing the Mini-Sprints main was the first time I have ever seen a 1 car event with the #72 of Barnes not making the call, leaving only the #69X of McHugh to run 2 laps for the win.
Have A Great Day God Bless Everybody

Re: Recap & Results for the Dirt Track @ Motiva Motor Speedway 7-19-2014
Bob, thanks for the update. As far as the mini sprint car count this past Saturday there was a New Mexico Mini Sprints club race at Aztec that pulled a number of the regulars at Motiva.
