Usually though nature cleanses the bowel before delivery and that is why a women should be allowed to use the toilet during labor. If a medicated birth she is out of luck I guess. Most women I talk too fear before, but during the actual pushing part, they don't really care. Other more important "pains" takes over, but a true fear of having a BM during birth can inhibit the labor thus leading to no progress during pushing, thus perhaps a c-section. I've had 5 births and poo pooed during two of them. I had all my babies at home, so there were no worries. I used the toilet right up until pushing and was never confined to a bed. Intersting topic embarrassed. Even with my shy bowel, I hadn't given to much thought about the mama's who enter the hospital and worry about defecating in front of strangers. Probably many women wish not to talk about it.
