i've never met anybody who's got completely better and no longer has shy bowel (or shy bladder for that matter). however, it's possible to remove a fair bit of the anxiety and energy drainage that comes with it. speaking from my own experience, i've found that not being ashamed to tell people about my condition when it looks like it's gonna cause a problem for me (e.g. going on holiday with someone, somebody coming to stay over etc.) plus, i've also found going on anti-depressants really helped with me, though i hate to say it.
as my psychologist friend pointed out: there's the problem itself, and then there's what you make of the problem.
