I am sorry but that is the most silly explanation imaginable and one that is not only historically untrue (ancient Rome, for one, had communal toilets) but also anthropologically.

We suffer from a psychological problem that really should be looked at with more insight or else how can we possibly hope to recover. This explanation is as delusional as our phobia.
