I feel they are just passing him through the system because they don't know how to teach him or do not have the resources. I am terified to think what will become of this smart kid with a good attitude if he can't read or write well enough to pass the high school exit exam. I have our yearly iep meeting coming up in 2 weeks. How do I deal with this. It has been suggested to me that I sue the school to put him in a private school. I hate to think that I would have to go that far to get him an education but is this how far people have to go to make sure they get what is needed for their kids. The local school costs about 25% of our current family income this would be overwelming for us to have to pay. I would probably have to re-finance my house. I have a friend who has a 10th grader who is in the same school district as us. He was idetified as LD in 1st grade. He can hardly even write a one page essay without help from his mom. He can hardly read. This is not an acceptable outcome for my son. Please if anyone has some advise I would appreciate it. Thank you.
Now that he is in 4th grade it is really starting to catch up with him and he is coming home with poor/failing grades. His grades are suffering in even his best subjects like math. It is taking about 2.5 to 3 hours a night on homework. I can't read what he writes and the sad thing is if you ask him to read it to you he can't either. They have modified his work by giving him prewitten social studies notes, cutting back on the busy work requirieng writting. The resource teacher works with him in the regular class. I help him by reading to him what he needs to type. (He still has not mastered keyboarding). They give him all his spelling words but reduced his dictation sentances from 10 to 3. He doesn't learn the proper use of the words by getting this type of accomidation. They continue to offer accomidations but if he does not do the work how will he learn well enough to move to the next grade.
