Re: lack of item variance on the CPI
A certain amount of variance is expected across items for any given rating. In fact, considerable variance is the 'norm'. When a given rating is suggested to be invalid due to lack of item variance, it simply means that there was an 'unusual' lack of variance across items for the person completing the rating. This frequently occurs when the person completing the rating has limited knowledge of the person being rated and over-utilizes the rating of 3 for 'uncertain'.
