As part of my graduate research at Columbia University in New York I have created a free online course for parents of children with special needs. The course, Advocacy in Special Education, is designed to give parents the tools for successful advocacy. The course includes two surveys, three readings, self-study questions, and one short-answer assignment (tailored to personal needs). It will be available through fall 2004. All responses are confidential and there are no obligations. Advocacy in Special Education has information on special education documentation, legal rights, practical strategies for obtaining supports and services, and a list with nearly 400 references to nationwide parent support networks and special education resources. Everyone who completes the course will receive a course certificate, the extensive resource list, and will be eligible for a drawing for one of five $25 Amazon.com gift certificates. For information and registration please e-mail advocacy@tc.columbia.edu.
