Like I said Brien, it's a bit of cocking around but worth it in the end. If you look at an exploded diagram you'll see how it all works, but basically...
The cable pulls the actuating arm upwards which then rotates on its axis.
The sprung ball bearings underneath push against the arm's central boss which is now pushed inwards toward the gearbox.
This pushes the pushrod, which pushes the adjuster screw that's screwed into the clutch pressure plate.
This lifts outwards and, voila, your clutch is disengaged.
It's a pretty basic design and the problem arises due to the fact that the pressure plate only lifts about a quarter of an inch so if the paltes are a bit sticky or the pressure plate is uneven, then you get drag.
Of course, the standard trick is to always boot the old girl over a few times with the clutch in before starting to free everything up.
