I split them and reassemble with a new O ring--they are readily available.
The original instructions were for the times when the factories wanted to sell reconditioned units---those times are long since gone!
Fitting those rings is a bit tricky ---but a hell of a lot easier if you have the halves to play with--you can get a suitable sized socket on the ring and gently squeeze it in in a vice.
Apply a smear of lubricant on the outside of the ring and before assembly just go round the lip of the caliper with a scraper to give the tiniest of chamfers in order to help the ring get started on its way in.
