back when freezers were not common, on our way to the coast with our rangoon cane rods we would pick up a fresh roadkill (possum,rabbit or the like) to use for our first baits. using this we would catch a snapper or trev, then these would be used untill a kahawai came along, then kahawai would be used for the day.
THE OTHER OPTION IN THOSE DAYS WAS LIVER SOAKED IN KEROSENE.worked a treat
