The gurnard shown here were caught at Sunset Beach, Port Waikato. I've only caught them at low tide when the swell was minimal. I've caught one shoalie snapper only. You can fish the river for kahawai and trevally. The second pic shows a typical river trevally. The last pic shows the beach when a typical swell is running. It's a hard beach to fish when it's like this, and I had no success on that trip. I go there because a cousin lives there. I wouldn't rate it as a prime surfcasting destination.
