There was a method of surfcasting that was once very popular, although it was necessary to have a long stretch of beach to yourself. This involved using a ball sinker and actually encouraging the end gear to move using the tidal current. This was handy for a bait to move quite realistically into a gut, channel or known feeding hole.

The angler would make a cast, then holding the rod quite high, he would walk along the beach at the same rate the sinker was moving. This presented the bait in the best way possible and at times was quite deadly. This method seems to have fallen from favour, it is now rarely seen or written about. This was known as 'Walking The Dog'.
