My wife actually works at Watties consumer services, so I know they will imports product when they can't get it locally (NZ/AUS). The consumer still expects to be able to buy product, even when its not in season. (then they complain because its not locally sourced).....
They buy product from all over the globe, not just China.

As far as squid is concerned, its just bait to me but Hoki is expensive fish, surely there is enough profit in that to process it locally and support NZ jobs.
