Today the sea off Napier was simply alive with kahawai, no matter where you looked they were on the surface thrashing into small shoals of what looked like whitebait, they were certainly the same size. There was no need to go out any distance, the birds could be clearly seen working very close to the beach.

My son and I dropped down to the lightest spinning rods, tiny open face reels loaded with 3kg braid, he fished a soft bait, I fished a fly. For sport value nothing can beat it, hook into a fish and it pulled line with little we could do about it.



Then the obvious happened, a solid hook up.



This is not supposed to happen on a very light trout spinning rod.
