When fishing Pikowhai in the Bay of Plenty, a 30cm sliding trace with a 3oz lead always produced fish and there is no easier rig on the market, or anything simpler to tie.
Fair comment about using a pillie but my preference would be anchovy. As they are used whole it looks and acts like a completely natural dead bait, which of course it is.
Although everyone will have their own thoughts, and rightly so, a lot of rigs being used today are complicated. This can be a real problem when you suffer a breakage and you are forced to tie a new rig by torch light.
I mentioned on another thread, there is more bullshit written about fishing than any other sport. Keep it simple, keep your hooks sharp and your bait well presented, the rest is up to the fish.
