You're on the right track, Warwick. The only swell that misses Ocean somewhat is a true SW, in which case it's flat at Haumoana. If I see a groundswell at Haumoana that is reported from S or SE, I figure it will be 3X at Ocean. If there is wind and swell from the east, that's not good south of the Cape either, but it might be good for East Clive if it's snapper time.
Ocean Beach is often unfishable due to current rather than swell. You were lucky there wasn't weed to add to your misery.
