there are so many aspects of softbait fishing, and every aspect has its own technique! weather its chucking a shad or pogy just in behind the waves on a pully rig using a float or tossing a crab on a ledger rig out to the abiss for a gurnard...... so many ideas to choose from.

no matter how good you are with a soft bait at the end of the day it all comes down to finding the fish, putting your self into the position to catch.

targeting fish is another biggie!! for example if you where targeting kahawai you wouldnt put a 1" crab on a ledger rig? you'd try and get a bit of movement with a float in the current "this will also keep it off the deck" and use a trace around 750mm to 1m also a shad would be more affective........

most fishing rigs can be affective when using softbaits from the surf, although most softbaits are more adequate through movement the likes of crabs, crayfish and worms can be fished well from a ledger. shad pogy's and mullet work better on running rigs, pully rigs ect....... and a float gives them the movement! try bruce bashers idea in his new Zealand fishing mag article, off centered float witch will wobble al over the place!

the next time your hitting the surf take a step back and just look.................... have a think to yourself about how you will get the best results from your softbait, WHAT fish are most likely to be there? WHAT are they eating? and the MOST effective rig and softbait to counter this?

    the answer will follow
