neil when you are deciding how long your shock leader is have a think of its use ie....... is there a swell if so longer shock leader will assist your landing of the fish. if its a nice clean flat beach and its purely to aid the cast then 3-4 wraps is all you need to take the pressure.
after bagging braid for the last two years i have gone to useing 60lb braid. good strength and small diameter for knot tying, my theory is that the braid will hold more pressure in the cast as well because there is no strech.
if using mono then i use 30lb and do a double uni knot 3-4 wrap witch is a bloody small knot and still has all the strength in it............ it sounds like a light shock leader but as long as you retie the knot and replace the shock leader each time its fine
