After an afternoon at H/F Rotorua testing a couple of new fly rods with Mike Davis (one of which will almost certainly to make it to my Christmas stocking) a window of opportunity presented to head to the beach namely the northerly had dropped.
Both swell maps were good, beach cam at the mount looked even better with a constant 1/2 to 3/4 of a metre swell set from the N/E.
First hour was sit on the beach watch the waves convincing myself this channel would be the spot once the sun dropped worth while getting there at low tide to make spotting the channels easier.
First bait went out at 6.15pm first snapper hit the beach at 6.45pm. 2.2 kilos
Then a bonus gurnard at 7.15, 800 gm size not bad, 20 minutes later second snapper 2.50kilos getting bigger!
Still no wind (20 knots were forecast at some point from the north), swell still steady but no bigger than earlier.
8.45pm, one rod bounced back, slack line classic gurnard take but then this "gurnard" took line then more line and nodded its head a number of times to become a 4.5 kilo snapper in great condition. Great pb for that beach.
Things went quiet then until 10pm when a fourth snapper hit the beach and at 1.5kilos and the smallest went back.
Then in came drizzle and a really errie fog followed by the rain 10.30 home or at least the drive home.
