    The Rod Worrier Archived Message

    Hi All

I have a new fishing buddy, who I have named "The Rod Worrier" Took her out for her very first Surfcasting expedition the other day. Put out two rods and set up two chairs. But no sitting down for Penny, back and forwards between the rods she went, testing the line tension. Gazing endlessly at the rod tips. Everytime a tip would move with a passing wave. She would gaze expectantly at me. And recieve a slight shake of my head in return.

A couple of small bites really got her in a frenzy, but never even got me out of my chair.

Just as I was thinking of packing up and heading home, over went the rod she was standing by and doing her steady gaze thing to. Boy did she jump, mind you so did I, right out of my seat.

Over to the rod, and yep, she has hooked up. So I take the rod out of the stand and give it to her.
"What do I do now, she crys, well I said, I guess you sorta wind the fish in. And just stood back.

Well quite a nice wee fight was on, at first she just tried to wind, as she took her first fish on, I in my normal quiet manner, explained how to use the rod to play the fish. Well she picked that up pretty quickly and soon was pumping the rod, and more or less doing things the right way.

I just stood back and left her to it. Well the only way to learn is " Do it" I had about 15kg line on, so it wasn't going to snap and the fish was obviously firmly hooked. I might add I had put the heavier mono spools on both rods. Just to make it a little easier for her, should she hook up with a reasonable sized fish.

Well pretty soon it was in the breakers and shooting up and down the beach like a demented off course torpedo. But she tamed in and then it was in the wash. Time for me to wander down, grab the line and do the final keel haul with an incoming wave.

Well bugger me. About a five and a half pound fiesty Kahawai. Not bad for your very first fish eh.

Oh Penny has a thing about pink, cant you just see. Strangely I had put a pink float on the trace, as the crabs were about. And the squid kinda had a pink hue to it. And of course Penny was tickled pink. And yep I was kinda proud of her too.

I might add, no, she doesn't have abnormally large feet. She was wearing my gumboots.

It was fresh kahawai that night for her tea, and the rest I smoked for her.

I fear now, I only have to mention the word fish and she will be around on her bike rearing to hit the beach.

Another Surfcaster is born. A bloody Pink one tho.
But one " Good Keen Women "

    Cheers Hardy aka Trev
