    I work with the secretary of the HB Surf life saving association and have been talking with her about this. She showed me this email she received today....

    An update. Spoke with ****** ****** from HDC today. In short looks like the gate is definitely going to happen. Main reason is the Trust do not want people free camping on there land and the balance of the land in front of the Surf Club and carpark area is Council Reserve Land and is also not available for camping. When various members of the wider Whanau have approached people camping to leave or move on they have sometimes been abused or felt threatened so this is seen as the best remedy.

    ****** admitted that they hadn't relayed this message very well to the wider Ocean Beach community. He is preparing a press release/letter we can circulate to our membership over the next 24 hours.

    We will hold upwards of 6 keys and have the same access rights that we currently hold. I believe they may look to extend the opening closing times during the summer. Still think it will have an impact on us.

    The good news is the beach is to be raked and cleared over the next couple of weeks.


    Take from that what you will, but the certainty is there will be locked gates at night
