    I guess the perception comes from the fact that surfcasting (for 99% of people) doesn't produce the results (fish in the pan) as regularly or in the quantity as other methods (boats/nets etc).
    Many people will have tried surfcasting once or twice and caught nothing. They will have dismissed it as as waste of time, not viable, [insert excuse here].

    Those people who don't, or didn't, persist with it will have the opinion that it doesn't work as far as actually catching fish goes.
    They didn't bother to learn the vital methods and tricks which must be learnt before they can have any chance of success. They didn't bother to do the apprenticeship.

    A person who has never held a fishing rod in their life can catch fish from a boat. This is the reason charter boats exist.
    Give that same person a surfcasting kit and show them a beach, odds are they will catch nothing and dismiss it as a waste of time.
    They will get discouraged, put the surfcasting gear in the shed and it will sit there gathering dust.
    Then one of us will buy it on Trademe
