Why do holes Fish Better Archived Message

    Hi All

Well here is my theory. Its not so much the added depth of water. As the fish actually has to arrive at the hole, which means he is swimming along the beach in the average deoth of water, and then arrives at the hole. Now if you wade into a hole at low tide and take a look. It is full of all sorts of interesting things for a fish. Bits of sea weed, dead crabs, broken mussells, dead shell fish.
Bits of water logged driftwood. All sorts of interesting thing for a fish to hang around. Mainly food. And also live shellfish can be exposed in a hole.

So an intelligent fish works out, hey, if I hang around here the current will bring food to me and it will drop in the hole. So I don't have to hunt it. Much like a trout in the lee of a rock. Waiting for food to come to him, rather than him to food.

A depression or hole in the beach is not as subject to current or wave action. But what current or wave action exists, brings in food, which drops into the hole and stays there.

So the fish seek out the holes. Lets call it their KFC or McDonalds joint, damm food without having to swim and struggle.

Bit like a fish swimming down the road, looking for a road kill, sometimes its a long way between road kills. But a hole, well, all the road kills get washed into it.

The gutter is the fishes highway, the hole, well thats where he picks up his food parcel.

Often a good hole is recognised by an abundance of food material cast on the beach either straight behind the hole, or either side of it. (depends on the longshore current direction).

An early incoming tide may dislodge the goodies and drive them up the beach. but the hole or depression is being constantly re-supplied.

And that is why I reckon holes always fish well, day after day after day. The fish never seem to stay to far from a good hole. Would you if you were a fish.

    Cheers Trev aka Hardy
