This time of year the blue moki are thinning out, but there are still a few to be had. Good trevally fishing this time of year and all kinds of things pop up. Try 2/0 and 3/0 hooks with mussel bait. Dawn is great as there can be a lot of blue cod around there too. Like anywhere it depends on the day and anything can happen. The south coast will throw up moki, kahawai, blue cod, tarakihi, trevally, the odd snapper and a few surprises. Try around Makara and the west coast too around Pukerua Bay. 3/0 hooks and mussel and small strips of fresh trevally can hit.

I fished the harbour almost exclusively for 2 years as I was poor and couldn't afford gas to go further afield. The harbour will produce all kinds of things after dark. Evans Bay on a high tide at dusk and into the evening can be hit and miss, but when it it hits its pretty good.

To be honest, Wellington is quite hammered, so the trick is to try a spot, and that could be ANY spot. There is almost nowhere that won't pop something up at one time or another. Look for areas of weed close to the rocks and cast a light sinker out past it. Some very good fish have come from the harbour if that is your preferred location, but you have to be willing to stick it out. Cobham Drive, Shelley Bay, all around Miramar including the wharf. The wharf can be exceptional for gurnard in spring. There's fish there. Small baits and small hooks.

    Enjoy it.
