Hi There see below the clarification from MAF for Daily Bag Limits

    Hello Dennis,

    Thank you for your enquiry.

Your interpretation as outlined below is correct. There is a difference between Snapper and Red Snapper in which you may take in addition to the 20 Finfish Daily limit the following:

Snapper: a daily bag limit of 10.
Groper/Hapuku/bass and kingfish: a combined daily bag limit of 5 with no more than 3 kingfish.
Freshwater eels: a daily bag limit of 6
Each person who has an active role in the use of the long line is entitled to 20 fish per day. Active roll meaning assisting with the set, retrieval, taking fish off hooks etc.

I trust this information assists with your enquiry.

    Subject: Daily Bag Limits

    Hi There.

I am just after some clarity

Reading the central recreational fishing rules (which is my area) It is my understanding and interpretation that the daily bag limit is 20 finfish but there is an additional limit of 10 Snapper and you can also catch 5 hapuka or 3 kingfish and 2 hapuka so that in my reckoning that is potential for 35 fish. .
I also believe that (RED Snapper) which is included in the bag limit of 20 fin fish is not (SNAPPER) there is a difference in these two species
    Have I interpreted correctly?

Also if two people are fishing with a torpedo/kontiki does the bag limit apply to each person or the kontiki? I would have assumed that each person would be able to claim a bag limit as if on a boat.

The bag limit information is not required for greed but for clarity as I own a torpedo and want to be sure I don’t break the rules.
All conclusions have been derived from your info below.

    Daily limits per person

In the Central Fishery Management Area there is a combined daily bag limit of 20 finfish, consisting of any combination of:

    •Blue cod
    •Elephant fish
    •Kahawai
    •Red gurnard
    •School shark
    •Blue moki
    •Flatfish
    •Parore
    •Red moki
    •Tarakihi
    •Bluenose
    •Grey mullet
    •Porae
    •Red snapper
    •Trevally
    •Butterfish
    •John Dory
    •Red cod
    •Rig

There is no limit on species not named above.

Additionally, individual limits, over and above the combined bag, apply to:

Snapper: a daily bag limit of 10.
Groper/Hapuku/bass and kingfish: a combined daily bag limit of 5 with no more than 3 kingfish.
Freshwater eels: a daily bag limit of 6.
