Mate, you live in snapper friendly waters. You need to head west. Anywhere from Makara as far north as you dare travel can get you into snapper. Obviously some areas are better than others. Te Horo beach is well known for big snapper during the right times. Pukerua Bay is worth a nudge. In fact, even Miramar Wharf produces a few.
I'd suggest, if you haven't already that you join WSAC. The local surfcasting club. There are many VERY good fishermen in the club, and with the right attitude people will help you out with ideas, places and you'll begin to learn how to fish successfully. Having said that, there's nothing more rewarding than trying a new spot and hitting gold. Don't discount any one spot because it doesn't work for you. Try it several times during different tides, moon phases, time of year. Get out there man. And don't be afraid to do some walking to reach some spots. A 30min walk can put you in range of a lot of spots that don't get much pressure. Those are the places worth looking at.
