When surfcasting in the Bay of Plenty, I went through a stage of having a very small keeper hook that was free to slide on the trace. One evening when fishing on a particularly rough night with long swells at Pikowhai, I had a really good hit, this proved to be a small kingfish (9kg) that had taken a small kahawhai that had taken the bait. When I finally landed the fish, it was the very devil trying to get it through the surf, I discovered it to be hooked on the tiny keeper hook, the main hook was swinging free. Thank goodness I always take things very easy and wait for the right wave to help land a fish, this time is paid huge dividends.
