Jase, your analogy with trout fishing is very astute: there are those who fish and those who cast. When guiding clients on Lake Aniwhenua nine out of ten times I would tell the client he was taking the fly from the water far too quickly, always fish your feet as this is where many fish are hooked. With surfcasting it's a common sight to watch an angler punch a bait out as far as possible and be proud of his efforts. However, on many occasions that person puts little thought into his bait selection or bait presentation, which are far more important.

The beach is little different. When secretary of the Pania club we had a lady join, Una Harding. She was new to the sport and with the wind behind her, if lucky, she could cast sixty metres. That year she rarely fished a competition without bringing fish to the scales.

If you are using two rods then of course it's easy to put one out full distance whilst fishing the inshore surf with the other. However, it's very rare you will see an angler using only one rod fishing behind the breakers. The old method of using a lighter ball sinker and walking along the beach with the current taking the weight (and the bait) under its control can work extremely well. This used to be called 'Walking the dog' and it works well especially as your burley is also caught up in the same current and washing along at the same speed as your bait. Most fish are opportunistic feeders, and you are right there in their zone.
