Fish is a Bluefin Trevally (tropical)
    Weight 10kgs
    Lineweight 8kgs.
    Location Hakufisi Reef Tonga
    World Record Claim.

I caught this fish on a pencil popper as seen. It was one of a number we hooked and few that we landed. At the time this blew the world record into the weeds. It was caught on IGFA tackle and I was sure that it would go through with no problems.
Hakufisi Reef if offshore about 20kms from Lifuka Island in the middle of the Tongan Chain. We were bringing our charter boat (Adventure 1.) up from Nukulofa. It was a full days running at full revs so stopping at Hahufisi was a welcome relief. I spotted the reef from a long way off as it has a large Taiwanese trawler stuck on it and breaking up. An underwater rim reef guarded the shallows of its lagoon and there was no dry land. We fished the southern face of the reef casting poppers in to the dropoff. Time after time we were wasted by big Giant trevally that blasted into the reef as soon as they were hooked. The smaller bluefin which ran from 3kg to 10kg were manageable about half the time. The location was tough and so were the fish. It was a great experience and we turned up at the lodge with three nice trevally. I told the cooks at the lodge to leave the big one as I needed photos and measurements for my title claim. When I came back ten minutes later they had cut up all the fish......bugger!!
