    Overnight mission 3/8/12 (Big File) Archived Message

    Shot out yesterday
    I had planned to have left New Plymouth (NP) between 10 and 11am, made the fatal mistake of just dropping into work to sort a couple of things, between a couple of little dilemmas to trying to post an update of the calendar with lethals bite times it went pear shaped.
    Finally after getting everything sorted I was on the road and heading out of NP by 1pm 2.5-3hrs I’d be at spot X.
    On approach to Mokau I could see that the see was cleanish with a smallish swell, a couple of supply stops and I was off again. It’s a slow winedy run in and this is the latest in the bad seasion I have gone up there, the road had a heap of slips, wet and slippery spots but hay if it was a walk in the park it wouldn’t be a spot X.



    These are some picks on the road in, (please if you know it keep it to yourself) as you can see its steep country, but the drive in alone relieves the mind of any dramas or stress, the views are amazing and with some good tunes cranking you drift away into another world then you end up here



    Just watch out for this fulla on the way out I was so close to steeping on him when he turned around started barking at me then chased me awhile (what the F, near shat myself) after coming back to earth I went and got my camera and had a bit of fun with him, that may have not been the best idea as the story will tell.
    Due to the earlier antics I was a bit late and due to 3-5hr sleeps per night over the last 2-3weeks they had taken their toll (I totally F-up the tides) anyway got out to the ledge unpacked, set up and cast out let it settle 1,2,3,4,5 hum 6,7,8,9 bang there it is, now I have been here 7 times (2 spots) and only caught snaps not under 30cm or over 50cm one after another seriously by 5 you are normally hooked up> This fish however was a nice KY (potential bait so kept him) cast out the second bait and by 8 weight on but dropped it this happened for the next 3-4 casts then I wizened up and nailed a Gurnard sweet few more of these will be nice next cast another KY


    From here it was a few KY (all returned) even using KY as bait, I moved around a bit but no real change and that Seal sat off the ledge the whole time so that may not of helped, and not one Snapper.
    As per Lethals Bite times between 6:30 and 7pm it all stopped and I mean stopped dead, I hung around till 8 and for some reason I thought 8 was high tide. On my way back I decided to throw a line into the sand from the rocks just to see if the fish had moved off the rocks and onto the beach, couple more KY returned. At this point I looked back toward the beach the tide was still high so carried on messing around, after a while I thought to myself must be getting lower by now I’ll go have a look hum in daylight yes at night no got back to my gear and settled in again al of a sudden the swells are coming up higher next one wet me Oh no at this point I clicked the tide chart I was looking at yesterday was not mine it was Lethals F,F,F,F, oh well I’ll have to sit it out.
    3hrs later(12:15am) I got back to the Ute, wet to my knees, cold shivering and starving quick much and make a plan because of my now apparent tide issue my plan of fishing until 10am was no longer as easy as first thought. I have to get the Ute off the beach and to drive it down the other end and walk in puts another 40min on the walk of 20-30min (I told mumsy I’d be home by 12-1pm) OK set alarm for 5 and walk out by 8. This went to plan bar the fish themselves, I was out on the ledge and fishing just before 6 got a couple of sharks but as the light grew it got better a few more KY and it was 7.30 I had to go.
    Got home safely and got a bit of time to reflect on my Spot X – I don’t think it likes night time fishing been there (2 spots) 3 times into the night each time night falls so do the bites and snapper in winter are hard to find in numbers anywhere down here. The kids were very keen to help unpack and play with the fish, smoked KY for lunch and Gurnard for dinner
