Left home at 4am with my youngest(6yr) excited and chirpy to be heading out fishing . Met 3 mates at the Whatipu carpark and had lines in the water by 5.30am. Clear conditions, Easterlies and <1m swell by Ninepin rock. Unfortunately the fish weren't exactly hot on the bite. Stumpy had a good take but was not near his rod and it slowly toppled over and hit the beach, by the time he got to it the fish was gone. Rohann managed a <1m smooth hound next, which gave him a good tussle in the increasing tidal flow.

A couple of hours after low we were forced from the spot. The others clambered onto Ninepin rock and fished from there. My youngest and I headed up the coast to try some of the channels. Unfortunately the surf was up a bit more then I've comefortably fished before. I found a nice looking hole (i think) and was able to cast into it but couldn't get a 6oz BoS to stick in the waves and current.

Ended up practice casting my new setup, Sonic SK3 with SL30sh and with a bit more concentration on technique over muscle I was able to get an extra 10m out of my cast. Couldn't quite get the OTG thump working but will keep practicing. Managed to not birdsnest all day, all blocks in place and slowly loosening the casting knob as I got comfortable with it. A piece of bicycle inner tube on my thumb assisted in spool braking.

Headed back and caught up with the guys as they were getting off Ninepin before they were stuck there over the high. They'd had some fun with a couple of big 'cuta and some small kahawai.

Fished the bay between Paratutae & Ninepin for nix before calling it quits about 1pm. Mullet, occy & pillies not doing it for the fish today, baits returning nibbled or whole .

Shame the gurnard didn't play ball but that's fishing. Mr6yrs had a blast running around the dunes and splashing in the waves and was completely knackered by the time we got home (actually I was too).

Hopefully next weekends Davey Jones challenge will yield more fish!

Cheers for all the info I'm gleaning from this forum.
