I went fishing with a German tourist who has been here on sabbatical leave for about seven months. In Germany, he's a tutor in tool making. He bought a Warehouse rod and reel, but decided to make a sand spike. He created his own design rather than copy a local product.
The first pic shows the rod as he would have it when setting up his rigs and bait etc.
The second pic shows the rod held in position by the cup at the bottom, the short 'arm' to the right of the rod and the square stem of the spike. It was very secure.
The third pic shows how the rod is angled and pulled sideways from the spike when the butt is lifted out of the bottom cup.
