Worth the gas or not?

Yay, have next week off work, good time to hopefully hunt down a pre season snapper or 2.
Long range forecast is looking good, would it be worth the gas heading up around Mahia, whakaki Mohaka and inbetween for a few days fishing at this time of year?
Or seeing it's still early are these beaches still full of spineys?

Only one way to find out Andy. I reckon Whakaki would be a go. Take some crabs or cray as there may be some lemonfish about.
I see some are heading for the Bay of Plenty for midnight snapper and getting a few. Might be worth while if you want to go that far.
Someones gotta catch the first one for the club each year this time might as well be you. Best of Luck mate!!

), but he might be right this time.

Late August, however, is very early, and I wouldn't hope too much for a return on your $100+ spend on gas.

I'll just scum around at Haumoana this weekend. If I happen to catch anything decent, you can be sure you'll hear about it

I have done a lot on the calendar over this month Its getting really good so happy with that. Oh i wish Gary but it will come.

Hey Naki, what was the calendar saying about wed nite just gone?. Had a good fish up the Bop. Caught 7snaps between 1.5 and 2kg a couple of fat Gurnard and some Kahawai. Yet the night before just 1 Kahawai

. However the tuesday nite the ocean was a blaze of Phosphurus , really impressive, and probably the most id ever seen. Did this keep the Snapper out of the shallows?. Wed nite no Phosphurus and action a plenty. They didn't have preference on bait, taking Cray,Pillies and fresh Kahawai. Good to see something other than a red cod or Kahawai on the other end of the rod

I had wednesday night as a night of interest.
Going through some stuff I've found something im checking, A mate went out to a new spot over here and didn't get a bite but another guy was fishing very short and had some interesting run but came home with an empty bag.

9pm to 11pm. First bender i got which which felt like a bigger snapper i dropped which pissed me off, but not for long

. Next four casts were four snappers. This monday and tuesdeay eh?. Will have to test ya calendar. Those big snaps aren't far off i think in HB, end of September I'm picking. Looking forward to that.

Yea been a few snapper caught in wairoa on long lines. A big fula a pony and 3 smaler ones tuesday lunchtime whakamahia

I got a sholie tonight, about 20 frigin cm's.... Couldn't believe my eyes, along with a bloody big tope and a few kahawai on most other casts.

Snaps on long lines, not off the beach as yet

Yeah It was encouraging, but at the same time disappointment, knowing it could have been bigger. Going to head back Sunday.

I will be out a bit over the next week, Whakaki has been quiet as, same with most of that stretch, lots of small kahawai. Snapper rock has a few gurnard kicking around though. Got a decent trev there also.

And did you waste the gas Andy? My trips up there early September have been pretty dead in recent times? How did you go if you did get up there?

hes up there at the mo braving the sou easter. Kahawai and barracouta have been the staple for him. Suggested snapper rock for a few gurnards. Rex September used to produce some fantastic big snapper fishing. Ive had some very solid snaps from the carpark there in septembers past. However seasons have changed. Im sure chad will keep an eye on it

A few years ago I even nabbed a fish or two at the school in September but just not in recent years. It was very promising to hear a shoalie caught by Chad tho. Good on Andy for braving the elements. A moocher will appear for someone sooner or later I'm sure

Got back early hours of this morning, shame the weather yesterday wasn't up to the task...
Seemed to have one of those missions where things do not quite go to plan, like finding you've forgotten to bring a lighter for the gas cooker, having a water bottle leak in the back of the wagon making the carpet damp which released a distinct dog or cat pee odour, picking the old owner of the car used it to keep dogs in, getting a flat car battery, needing a call out to get jump started, discovering said battery is 8 years old and not worth it, putting on my waders and finding a new hole in the boot...

The actual fishing wasn't much better, Kahawai and coutta at Whakaki, I'm surprised the kahawai had any room in their mouths to take a bait, they all had a mouthfull of whitebait, which would have accumulated enough for a couple of fritters if you were that way inclined.
Shot over to Snapper rock Thursday afternoon, managed 1 gurnard for the time I was there.
Had one good take after midnight at Whakaki which ran for a while before spitting the hook, species unknown

Worth the gas? Well I had already decided before starting this thread I'd go as it will be my last for some time as some of you know, so in terms of enjoyment, yes it was worth the gas, in terms of fish caught, no.

Its not always about fish caught Andy. Bet you learned plenty before your next mission.

The Mohaka was much the same this weekend fishing wise, lemons, ka,y, cod and plenty of other sharks. but the weather and sea was awsome! Also had a feed of whitebait, but they came by the way of a well set net, not the belly of a fat ka,y!
