What did your calendar say for last night at 7:40pm?
A pb for me so far at 3.2kg from the beach. Managed to get a side of yellowtail mackeral past the hoards of baby kahawai that nailed everything, including octopus. This fella put up a hell scrap for a smallish fish.

Last nights pick was for a very good bite and potential big fish, (I posted it on here yesterday somewhere if you want a look) sounds like you had with the KY but not so much the snapper, did you try the ky as bait?. Well done on the PB mate the're getting bigger.

I had fresh mackeral an hour old, so wasn't really keen to kill more fish just for bait. The mackeral did the damage. The spot was good. It was dead low tide with a building NE wind churning it up. By the time I left at 10:30pm it was gusting 20knots, which isn't huge, but not that pleasant right in your face.
I'm learning heaps fishing up here. People think the Bay of Islands is easy pickings. Testament to how its not easy is how poorly Stuart was doing until I took him to some of my spots and showed him some things to look out for. They took me the best part of a year to find and test in all conditions before I finally started producing regular feeds. Prior to that his only catch was kahawai after kahawai.
The BoI is like everywhere else. You have to work for your fish. You can throw a rod off any beach and sit there and get nothing. I've been to several beaches and been the only one catching anything. Other times I've caught nothing, and the guys down the beach from me have fared no better. I agree fish are more readily available up here, but like everywhere else, if you don't put in the effort you won't catch fish consistantly. What I learned in Wellington was easy to put into practice here. Beach fishing is getting more results than many boat fishermen I know are getting. That may very well change as summer approaches. Time will tell. Am looking forward to it.

Took Caitlin (9y/o) for a surfcast this afternoon/evening. Caught a decent gurnard at 35cm, only to be upstaged by her with her first gurnard at 38cm. Talk about happy little girl. Landed a 28cm snapper 20 mins later (released), then Caitlin got a small kahawai. I decided to keep that as bait, which, at 7:45pm netted me a new pb snapper at 3.32kg on my new Veritas rod. Stoked with how it performed. Got a decent feed and had a few laughs.
Caitlin fell asleep at 8:45pm in the front seat, and I fished on until 10:30pm with one more hit that didn't stick. Got back into Kerikeri as a little girl woke up and said she was hungry, so off to Maccas. Caitlin, still half asleep picks up the bag when we arrive home and promptly drops most of mine in the foot well of the truck. Oops.
The highlight of the night? Caitlin sitting at the table, half a burger in hand and face plants the table asleep. I still can't stop laughing.

Well, last night (Friday) I hit a beach in Doubtless Bay. Had a solid 15kn wind right in my face, with a bit of slop pushing up the beach and an almost dead low tide. The forecast was for NW winds, so I'd hoped it would be a bit flatter for some gurnard, but not to be. There was a lot of weed and loose sticks on the beach suggesting a decent swell had pushed through earlier in the week.
First cast hit the water at 6:03pm. While pre-baiting some extra traces my rod goes and a nice 1.4kg kahawai becomes fish pie. Second bait hit the water, I set my sinker and drag, walked back up to my truck and turned around to find it bucking again. I thought to myself, ugh, kahawai plague. Wrong! A beautiful 1.6kg snapper graced my bin. The next 4 casts all got hook ups and all were small kahawai, 3 of which self released in the wash and one became bait. Next bait produced a 30cm snapper. I was still only fishing one rod. I hadn't even had time to get the other one out. I looked at the time on my phone. It was only 6:31pm!!
Then it stopped. I only had the one grey mullet as bait. As dark encroached and the sun disappeared behind the hill, the wind got biting and extra clothes didn't do much to stop it. One more bite, no hook up and at 11:30pm I called it quits and headed home. That was possibly the most intense 30 mins of fishing I've seen for a long, long time.
