fuel economy

righto I know its a bit off topic.

Im currently looking at buy a 3L V6 LWB Misti Pajero for the use of our beloved sport (much to elliots relief

) how ever it being petrol and to be honest a bit of big pigglet im wanting to know if there is anyone on the forum who has one or had one and could tell me what they were/are getting in the way of fuel economy.

Mate had around a 95 it was diesel and solid as a rock but a petrol one I think you'll hurt in the pocket mate there a big unit.

I have a V6 Petrol Surf. I get 400km - 430km open road on a tank. Costs about $120 to fill. 4x4 on sand eats petrol. Absolutely eats it. I believe you get better fuel economy from a tank of diesel, but its not really any cheaper to buy, if that makes sense.

yeah I hear there Jase, with the current cost of fuel and desiel/ruc their is a very very small difference that to be honest isnt worth the fuss hence why looking at the petrol model... lucky for me have a company van for the week so at least I dont need to worry about the around town and weekly running of the thing, Deisel seems to hold its value a bit better then the petrol aswell.

Hey Jono, I drive a '92 V6 Pajero and love it. Had buggerall problems with it. Petrol wise they not too bad, 600kms per 90ltr tank on the flat but as Jase said a tad thirsty on the sand but most are. My one's just clicked over 300,000km.
Just keep it properly serviced!!

I have a 3.3l petrol Terrano, it's very thirsty, haven't really worked out what milage I get out of it yet.
However by the time you factored in RUC + reg etc for diesel it would be roughly the same. Only difference is the weekly gas outlay

600km on 90L of gas works out at 18.8 miles-per-gallon in the old money..

Bearing in mind most 4wd vehicles are about as aerodynamic as a barn with the door open so they're never going to be thrifty to run..

My Mitsi van is only a 2L 4 cylinder petrol, but 18mpg is about the best it will do.

Nissan Safari rules 4.2ltr dsl runs on the smell of an oily rag. I can fill it in Foxton loaded to the hilt, hammer it to Whakatane drive all over the beach (towing Snappyboys Honda) and drive back to Taupo before it needs topping up.
Only two things wrong with it, I allways forget to buy miles and it costs about $500 to register.

I have a 3 ltr diesel turbo Surf- cost approx $80-90 to fill -get around 530- 545 kms at a push, I do alot of beach work and long hauls- easy to sleep in the back- as Phill said km's are a pain- been a 4 door register it as personal and 2 tonne cost approx $440 for 12 months- put a switch on the speedo

cheers for that James, the 92 model is the one im seriously looking at. im lukcy to now have a work van so i dont have to worry so much witht he around town driving but the old girl has said we still need to keep it as a family car

so leaning towards the 7 seater (without owning a people mover haha) but have heard some intresting things on the bighorns... trans, shocks and electrics but havent heard anything to bad about the pajeros other then they drink fuel like its going thru a funnel during a student party!

I dont feel like spending as much time this summer being stuck as I did last year so any other suggestions?

I have an Isuzu Bighorn Lotus LTD. #,1 L Turbo diesel. Gets 10l/100kms with open road range of a tad over 650 kms. Off road it is a bit harder on juice but so what, eh!
I've had Isuzu Bighorns since 2000 with no problems. Only down side is RUC and insurance costs. Seems unfair to pay commercial rates for a private vehicle, ho-hum!

My truck costs not too much. I give it a hiding and for a '93 its bloody good. The V6 engine is a bit tired and on big hills its struggles, but reality is for a fishing truck its awesome. Apart from the petrol costs, which you accept when you buy a 4x4, it costs the usual rego, warrant and service. I only service it once a year being a petrol so it only needs it every 15000km.

If you need grunt go for something more modern. If you intend to beat it up buy something older.

Things to look our for are panel rust. Check the bottom of the doors inside, around the windows - especially the front and rear windscreen and rear window panels. Any bubbles bigger than 20c, or anything at all around the windscreens, don't touch it. Look for inconsistencies in the panels too from different angles to see if its been bogged. And finally check underneath to see what the underside looks like. Rust is fine under there, as long as its not dark in colour or running along a seam line. Also check the sway bar mounts. They are a warrantable item and while it may seem not a big deal, broken mounts will affect your body roll big time.

Also check the tyres. If the tyres are old then they may need replacing. Factor that into your cost. A decent set of AT's will set you back $900-$1100. Take it for a test drive. Listen for pops, misses, whines in the engine and how it handles.

Sounds like a lot, but in reality its a 2 minute check.

Diesel is the way to go if you don't mind disconnecting speedo's etc.
I'll be looking at the later model L400 Mitsi Vans which are 2.8 turbo diesel if/when I can get some cash organised.
Plus they are walk-through from front seats to rear compartment which is better than having a bloody great engine cover between the seats.
You can pick them up from $3K to $6K and they come with enough removable seats for your tribe.
The vans are pretty good in 4wd too. I've not had mine stuck. At least no so stuck that I couldn't get myself out.

And of course, heaps of room for sleeping/cooking/camping etc once the seats are removed.

I also have a Delica 4x4 high roof one of the best vehicles I have used on the beach goes pretty much anywhere but the Safari is cheaper to run.

whats the economy on the delica phill? I use to have one of the early 2wd ones but found the diff/gearbox ratio was a bit too low, are they any better now? other then thatit was a great little van

On the subject of gearing, yes the original tyres are quite small and while this makes for good slow and hill work, it has the engine running at 3000rpm+ on the highway. At least on the petrol 4cylinder ones.
Hilux wheels/tyres are the answer, same stud pattern but bigger/wider. It raises the gearing quite a bit.
The problem then is power (or the lack of it) to push the higher gearing on the road.
I'm guessing the turbo diesels would handle it ok, but the standard 2L petrol doesn't like 5th gear unless its flat or downhill!

Foxon to Tokoroa fully laoded on a full tank they only hold about 60ltrs, use the gears and keep the turbo spooled up at 3000rpm it will go all day like that. I also put a big bore exhaust on it made a huge difference in allround performance. Going to do the same with the Nissan shortly.
