The Gurnard are in

Got a couple of gurnard at Ocean beach yesterday evening. Conditions absolutely perfect, flat calm.

Mark got a nice fat Lemon just on dark.
This is why it was so fat

Eight Lemon pups swam off to become biggies.

The crab pot was working well, freezer now full of lemon baits
Mark has a photo of that somewhere.

And in stark contrast I fished the Esk end of Le Quesne road last night for 2 kahawai before getting plagued by spineys

Hows the track to the beach at present?

The track is good, lots of cuts and bays close to the dunes though. Would be easy to get trapped around there if you stayed too long after the low tide.

Good one Race. Yeah the sea cuts right into the dunes at about an hour or two after low tide dependent on whether theres a slight lift or its flat calm. Is there any evidence of whether that gate is getting locked at night??. Will head out tomorrow for a look, conditions more Northerly today.

We were gone at 6.30pm. Gates were unlocked.

hi ill be heading to Ocean some time soon for a fish never been there before ,how do you dive the beach. Is it a low tide fish or can you drive the beach at low find a high spot fish over the tide and leave back on low ? also can you do over nights there on the beach any where , any help or tricks would be great thanks

Ocean Beach requires a lot of respect from those who drive it. The fact that you need to watch out for the rusting bodies of cars that didnt get off the beach tells you that.
Drive at low or thereabouts and you should be right. The further up the beach you go the softer it gets.Watch out also for seals, penguins and nudists. All of which offer a thrill for the angler.

If theres stuff all activity in the way of swimmers,boaties,and smurfs fish the carpark area as good as any if theres a good deep channel close at hand or a complete absent sandbar is even better. Stop at the top of the hill before you drive down to easily read the water. Ive pulled a 21lb snapper surfcasting in front of the surfclub one september evening, and numerous Gurnard and Moki swell as good size lemons. No 4wd required there.

I went to Ocean Beach today with the harrier club. A kontiki dude was packing up at the car park. He'd got 6 gurnard. I found another one down the beach hauling in. He got 3 gurnard and various undesirables. See pics below. There were also spineys littering the beach, which I suspect were left there by the dude who was packing up.

You should have picked up the undesirables and taken them back to the kontiki fisher. I guess he didnt leave any gurnard lying on the beach for you Mark?

Just got back from another afternoon at Ocean.
Bumped into Duncan at the gate, he was gonna walk in so gave him a lift.
Fished the same spot as yesterday, blowin a gale down the beach today though, still reasonably flat calm.
No gurnards today.
Five Kahawai and 3 carpet sharks for me. One kahawai for Duncan.

I was at Ocean this avo with the harriers, but I didn't get as far as your location. The kontiki people landed a bigger carpet shark than that one. Five kahawai is good. Must be Mark Ives' blue floats?????

One was on the "blue floats" but I was trying to catch a Gurnard and stopped using floats.
The double ledger rig without floats just produced Kahawai two at a time. Or one Kahawai and one Carpet Shark together. The Kahawai were even taking the crab baits..

Herewith the crab haul from last Friday at Ocean Beach. One of about three hauls. Excellent size to make a bait.

@hbfisher - yes you could drive down the beach at low tide and then stay over the high tide.
There are places where you could back your 4wd up to the base of the dunes and wait the night out.
You'd want to be very sure of the weather forecast.

I doubt anyone would bug you for doing that, especially if you were way down the beach.
