Bait Solutions

Last year I spent around $350 on bait so decided to Purchased a Vacuum packing machine in view to save on Bait costs by packing my own fresh bait.
It is awesome, the bait can be fresh and kept in the fridge for a week and is just like it was caught ,The frozen also thaws out like it was fresh also, you just place them in the film so as they dont overlap and the machine sucks out the air and seals it, so far I have used YEM & Kahawai and I am just salting my first lot of Kahawai. You can vary the size of bait packets.
I will post some photos tomorrow. Its also going to be awesome for veges from the garden.

I find it best to not over salt the ky or else it can turn into rubber. I tend to leave it max of 48hrs and then bag it or freeze it.

Thanks EditB This is my first go at salting and I dont think i oversalted it see photos in next post of the vacuum packed bait i was talking about and a picture of our catch from 4 sets on Sunday with 3 lots of fresh YEM's and one of frozen yems that thawed as if it were fresh.

Have you tried any of the grunters as snapper bait? A mate reckons they're a dynamite bait.

Have you tried Snapper as a gurnard bait?

Cmon. There aint no way id waste a lovely fresh Gurnard on catching a Snapper. Salted Kahawai or occy for me as a longline bait. Fresher the better.

No EditB I'm the same as SNAPPA Napier, Gurnard is my favourite fish to eat so theres no way i would use as bait. Ive heard that Gurnard frames are highly rated for the cray pots though.

The crayfish you use for bait is not for human consumption anyway dead ones when they pull the pots up wouldnt use a fresh one

Bet it works for you if there are any fish around.

This cray bait had crab added to it and caught me a 10.5kg snapper last year.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

So where do you get cray bait from? Are you catching them yourself or have friends who catch them. I've not seen in any tackle stores and the fish shops only sell live ones. I'm dead keen to get some to take with me for the ROctober Fishing compas my secret bait

In summer I can sometimes get upto 15 a afternoon if all goes well handpotting with mates

EditB. Might see you at the ROctober comp. Its not far from here. Been chatting with Forsyth so might have a ride out to a rock, or might wing it from closer in via foot access. Not got a ticket yet. Need to sort the leave as I don't get back to work until wednesday that week and not sure the boss would be super happy with me having friday off too.
