What species is this

Caught today from a Palliser Bay Beach,, any ideas

This was a few minutes after beeing caught, the eye is a luminescent blue

Was it caught on a rod? Or wash up out of a trawl net. Looks like a deep water species. Similar to a Lancet fish??

This is a lancet fish. They come ashore occassionaly, north of East Cape. They are a deep water species but do show up from time to time.
Will post some info on them later.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

It was caught in front of our place, by a Feilding club member, Mangatoetoe, Palliser bay. He also caught a heap of Blue cod and Kahawhai> there have been many strange deep water species, caught from the same beach over the years. Murry was practicing for the Moki $1ooo. trying to catch a Moki

It certainly looks like a Lancet fish,, but this one is brown, across between an eel brown, butter fish brown

They can be a number of colours. Thanks Panser for the info, saved me a job.
