Pania Club Field day 1.

Well we had to do it, we had a marginal forecast with 2m swell from the south easing but not much wind other than a sea breeze in the afternoon. So we went, yes to Porangahau. The sea was up but there was something going on. Something interesting and unfathomable. My first cast of the season caught me a kahawai as did the second and third. All under club size unfortunately. We shifted and came accross birds on the beach. Not uncommon, but theese were Oyster Catchers. There were thirty three of them all together. Now usually we see two or rarely three together and that is all. This was fascinating. I walked up to them and took some photos. You will notice that they are all standing on one leg. Why would that be? when I spooked them by getting too close they hopped off on one leg. The didnt try and fly. and only used two legs when they couldnt hop fast enough. Very innteresting. WE moved on to another spot near the rivermouth.WE scared a seal on our way up the beach. It ran into the sea and dissapeared. No fish there but I watched two red billed gulls catch and eat about 30 whitebait as they made there way around a little point and in to the river. We moved again to the centre of the beach. WE found a nice gutter running parallel to the shore and just in casting range. Sue caught three kahawai here and I caught another three. For a while things were looking up then it was all downhill like the temperature so we packed up and headed home. WE love Porangahau. It is a surprise every visit. Apart from the wonderful wildlife encounters todays surprise was a nice big fat kahawai for Sue. The snapper don't know where the car park is! Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

Rumour has it, rumour mind, that you went the wrong way and all the red and pink fish were caught local and north. Big, big, red and pink fish lol

Well results are in and what a season opener! Sues kahawai was the first pin fish of the season at 2.57kgs, followed shortly after by a great 1.02kg gurnard from Mike Percy and then James Benges' 13.44kg snapper. We weighed in today as many gurnard as we caught all season last year! Lets hope it carries on. The snapper don't know where the car park is! Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

It was a case of fortune favoured the brave. The hardest working fisherman got the rewards. James went all the way up North which no one else was keen to do and got some damn good fish as a reward. Gary and Sue went to Porongahau (some would say madness) fishing in 2 metre swells and got some good fish amongst the one legged oyster catchers. Duncan and Snappa were toughing it out in almost frost conditions at just about midnight to get their fish. Snapped a pic of a few of us toiling away at a somewhat unproductive Westshore yesterday. Seem to be a lot of white rods around. Note some of the interesting practices on display. Andy measuring his imaginary kahawai, Johny P casually sneaking away to check that no one has stolen his ginger kisses. (Yum they were nice to) Snappa looks very serious, obviously lamenting the fact he hasnt got enough red cod. Finally theres Duncan who is... well what is he doing? Could that be his secret to catching the kahawai. Special bait rub?
