Why catch them one at a time when you can use a trap like this to catch them 20 at a time

the real question is would you rather invest your time in catching bait or catching fish? i known what i would rather do

The only reason to use any of these is to catch your own bait and save money.
My crab pot has paid for itself many times over on what I would have spent buying prawns or cray.
My next project will be a cast-net (although I need to investigate the legality of using them in NZ)

hi race, have you tried your crab pot on steep shelving beaches like whirinaki or is it only any good on surf beaches? cheers

Cast nets are legal in NZ.

From the MFish website

Can I use a casting net in New Zealand?

There are no specific restrictions against using casting nets in New Zealand, however there may be closed areas (rähui), marine reserves or mätaitai to consider when setting your net.

The size of the mesh depends on your targeted species. For bait fish such as herrings, pilchards and pipers etc the mesh size is 25mm.

Regulations and mesh sizes for fishing nets are shown in our regulation brochures, which you can access here: Recreational section

So if you getany other fish in your 25mm bait net you would have to release them.

@Andy you can get in (just) but the track is dug up to hell in places so its 4wd only lots of ground clearance needed.

@MarkgHB - I've not tried it at Whirinaki. You would need calm conditions so that the surf didn't roll it over. I have it attached to 30ft of rope so I can throw it out a fair way.

while on the subject of crabs and whirinaki has anyone targeted lemons off whirinaki? there sure is plenty of crabs down there at the moment

however i did get 1 gurnard on tuesday morning.

I think the purpose behing this snare is to cast it where the best/biggest crabs is. Opposite side of the lagoon under the mangroves...?

There is a deep hole which would belly out most cars just out of shot (before you get to that washout area) and the section where you park at the end is just holes and mud at present.
The muddy bits should dry out soon enough though.
