Good weekend. Ended up with a nice haul of pink fish, but had to work hard for it in trying conditions. All in the 2.5 - 2.8kg range. Fantastic fishing when you can find the huas an what began in rough conditions.Wairoa Hawkesbay
I drove the beach an marked about 6 spots on the GPS. I fished the first spot over high tide, and landed a kahawai. 6 hours latter I moved to a low tide spot where I could wade about 80m in the moon light to the edge of a channel. First cast I got my first snapper at 11:30am down by the Tarawea mouth.....Dropped a second next cast and no more bites all night, just weeds and crap.
At about 3:30am driving up and down the beach I went and saw james Benge for a chat. I told him his spot was rubbish as the waves were smashing a mile out in the mist. I drove 4k back up the beach to my spot. I sat in the truck watching the sets roll in for about 20 minutes, and I wasn't impressed.
When I sat there I got a feeling that the fish were going to hit around James spot, so at 4am I drove back down the beach and parked up beside him. From there I fished one rod and landed 6 snapper as fast as I could cast and bait out. I finally got out a second rod and caught another 2 shortly after using crayfish and octopus.
As the light brightened, the fish went off the bite. The sea looked exceptional in the morning. It was a bloody long night, and several times I wanted to throw the rods on the truck and park up, but im glad I carried on because that period in the morning was outstanding. I couldn't believe how fast it went from being huge to perfect.
