Heard of 5 Horses taken on Kontikis from 6 to 13.2 kg between Bayview to Whirinaki. Had a customer bring in a nice 17lbr caught on a rod today too. Time to do some earlies and lates i think. Starting tonight. Good swell out wide, nice easterly joggle onshore, have to be worth throwing a bait at one of the local spots tonight.
Got smoked by a big fish last night. Dead low tide off the rocks on a thumb sized piece of kahawai. Had it well hooked and played it for about 5 to 8 mins before it reefed me and pinged off. It shot left, then I turned it and it shot right past me and then reefed me. At first thought it was a ray, but no wing pumps or anything to indicate a ray at all. Just solid, fast runs.
10 mins later I got another run, struck, pulled up solid and that fish shot left at a huge rate of knots. First I thought kahawai, then changed my mind to trev as it too reefed me (only running 8kg). I jumped across the rocks and eventually dragged it through the weed to find a 1.3kg snapper on the end. It played like a trev. I was very surprised. I was only fishing 1.5m-2m deep water at this stage.
