So who's been chatching what and were.
no luck for me as of yet been to westshore haumoana both places a few times at different tides i no its about being in the right spot at the right time and all that.
been useing pilly and squid for bait what do most of you guys use for bait?

Biggest Kahawai ever last night - 2.86kg!
and a couple of good snaps at matata using anchovies (miniture pillies)
Lost 2 fish that seemed to just mouth the baits - all mushy in the middle.

Anchovies for me. Not sure how others may bait their hooks but I like to cut off the head at an angle, this to allow the juices from the gut cavity to flow out, put the hook where the sun don't shine, and roll it out the front of the gut cavity. Bind this on with bait elastic (not bait cotton) it really helps to bind the tail end to the trace, this stops the bait sliding down the hook.

It pays to go to The Warehouse or somewhere similar and buy a small chilly bag, this to keep the anchovies frozen, it is far easier to bait the hook with a frozen fish body than one that has thawed out and gone soft.

This is a personal thing, a headless but whole bodied anchovy looks totally natural because that's what it is. It's aerodynamic shape aids casting because it offers less air resistance, it maintains the perfect shape of a fish when in the water making it totally natural.

I hope this helps, it certainly works for me.

A mate managed a few snapper, gurnard and a trev from Pikowai last weekend. Best snapper went 5.4kgs the rest were just pannies.

Hangler, you're on to it my friend. Hard to get good anchovies at present. New World has pillies as small i have seen for a long time. Will stock up the freezer asap. Here's a tip. Just take wot you need out of freezer, put them in plastic bag and wrap in plenty of newspaper. At he beach just cut tiny hole through the wrapping and take pillies out as you need. They stay frozen LONG time.

Might pay to have a thorough look at the bait sellers in Napier/Hastings. I treckon that the bait offerings have never been better.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

Went into three Hastings' sports retailers yesterday, looking to stock up for summer. All the anchovies were brown and looked to be very old, the pilchards were huge. I left them there.

Nice small Pillies at the mo and anchovies aren't too bad. HB is the shithole for decent bait really compared to BOP or further north. Shame really.

Having lived in the Bay of Plenty, I must agree with what you have written. The bait I purchased there was always fresh, and it presented beautifully. I was looking at some bonito in a shop yesterday, it had more freezer burn than a penguins backside. The skin was a patchwork of brown with virtually nothing of the lovely silver belly flaps that make it such good bait. I might also add the quality has had no impact on the cost.

On the positive side, I visited to Pack and Save supermarket and discovered some really nice fresh trevally. Many years ago this was a good bait for surfcasters but I am not so sure I would use it now, unless a standby. However, on the positive side, it makes an excellent bait for a long line, especially a torpedo.

Another good place to go is Action Outdoors who I know have some very good bait. Its been my experience that some shops do seem to put in a bit of extra effort when choosing bait to sell. There not all the same.
