Hi all, just starting back to surfcasting after many years away I notice a deafening silence on the use of Plastics/softbaits....um...is this cos they just dont work for surfcasting or the cost or what ?? Or am i too dumb to spot the obvious reason ??

Gurnard throughout the Bay at present. You just need the right conditions. When fishable Ocean Beach or Aropauanui are worth a try.
Softbaits are best when fish are concentrated but always worth a try. The biggest critics of soft bait only use them when nothing else works and then for a short time. Hardly a good basis to bag them. Give them a chance. New Crabbys might just be the answer for gurnard and moki. Just coming into shops now.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

Softbaits are lures and best fished as such. Surfcasting you'll always get a better result out of bait. Ive caught several types of fish including snapper to 20lbs on soft baits on the water but used as a lure. The key is getting movement out of them. Ocean beach for Gurnard would be my pick local, and up the coast Tahaenui.

Thanks guys for the advice, based on the consensus - if not unanimous - I'm gonna give the softies a go. Gary...no one - as far as I can see has stock of the new crabbys yet. So ...off to practice casting in the orchard - much less embarassing. Cheers RAP
